Development of acoustic devices for ultra - high energy neutrino detectors
نویسندگان
چکیده
Acoustic neutrino detection is a promising approach to instrument the large detector volumes needed for the detection of the small neutrino fluxes expected at ultra-high energies (E 1 EeV). We report on several studies investigating the feasibility of such an acoustic detector. High-precision lab measurements using laser and proton beams aiming at the verification of the thermo-acoustic model have been performed. Different types of acoustic sensors have been developed and characterised. An autonomous acoustic system, attached to the ANTARES prototype string " Line0 " , has been deployed and operated successfully at 2400 m depth, allowing for in-situ studies of the acoustic background in the Mediterranean Sea.

In situ acoustic calibration devices are necessary to assure the optimal performance of sensors and detectors for the acoustic detection of ultra-high energy neutrinos in underwater telescopes. Moreover, they provide evidences for the feasibility evaluation of the technique and for the determination of the entire detector efficiency. Following previous studies related to parametric acoustic sou...
متن کاملStatus of Radio and Acoustic Detection of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Neutrinos and a Proposal on Reporting Results
Neutrino astronomy offers the possibility to perform extra-galactic observations well beyond the photon absorption cutoff above 5 × 10 eV. Based on observations of cosmic rays, we already know that astrophysical sources produce particles with at least a million times more energy than this photon cutoff. Once discovered, either the nature of the sources themselves or the cross sections of ultra-...
متن کاملIceCube-Plus: An Ultra-High Energy Neutrino Telescope
While the first kilometer-scale neutrino telescope, IceCube, is under construction, alternative plans exist to build even larger detectors that will, however, be limited by a much higher neutrino energy threshold of 10 PeV or higher rather than 10 to 100 GeV. These future projects detect radio and acoustic pulses as well as air showers initiated by ultra-high energy neutrinos. As an alternative...
متن کاملDesign Considerations and Sensitivity Estimates for an Acoustic Neutrino Detector *
We present a Monte Carlo study of an underwater neutrino telescope based on the detection of acoustic signals generated by neutrino induced cascades. This provides a promising approach to instrument large detector volumes needed to detect the small flux of cosmic neutrinos at ultra-high energies (E 1 EeV). Acoustic signals are calculated based on the thermo-acoustic model. The signal is propaga...
متن کاملUltra-Low-Energy Germanium Detector for Neutrino-Nucleus Coherent Scattering and Dark Matter Searches
The status and plans of a research program on the development of ultra-low-energy germanium detectors with sub-keV sensitivities are reported. We survey the scientific goals which include the observation of neutrino-nucleus coherent scattering, the studies of neutrino magnetic moments, as well as the searches of WIMP dark matter. In particular, a threshold of 100-200 eV and a sub-keV background...
